Our Reporter – Bro. Morris Bentley (London Grand Bandit) brings you the story:
The Metropolitan Grand Lodge & Chapter Golf Society held its fourth and final event of the summer for the Captain’s Day Trophy on Thursday, 15th September, at Leatherhead Golf Club, Surrey, which was Founded in 1903 and laid out by Peter Paxton, who also designed the East Berkshire Golf Club.
Playing off the yellow tees at 5,757 yards on a Par 70, this was a true test of golfing ability with three Par 5s, five Par 3s and two long Par 4s of over 400 yards! The weather was warm enough for shorts, and the recent rain meant receptive greens from a lofted approach wedge, and there was some run on the fairways! The 22 golfers were seen off by our Hon. Starter, John Peters, and they produced very impressive scores. During the dinner, £200 was raised from the raffle for Charity.
The Nearest the Pin prizes for the five Par 3s were won by: Andrew Williamson on the 2nd & 15th, Barry Spencer on the 9th, Michael Fox on the 12th and Andy Bye on the 18th; which ended up just 1 foot from the hole, this last hole was 195 yards long and carried a stroke index of 9!
Nearest the Pin in Two on the 13th, guarded by railway sleepers, was John Bennett, while Tony Hyams won the Longest Drive, which went some 230 yards down the fairway on the 494-yard 16th hole.
The Winning Guest was Andrew Williamson with a magnificent 41 points playing off 20 and was very emotional as he left the 18th green as that was his highest-ever Stableford score. For the society members, past Captain Simon McCarthy was Runner-up with 34 points, and the Winner was Steve Martin with a very creditable 36 points.
